SPEECH THERAPY

Speech therapists, also known as speech-language pathologists (or SLP's) are professionals who provide an assortment of services that relate to communication disorders.  These services include identification, assessment, treatment & prevention of speech and language disorders.  SLP's also provide services for disorders of swallowing.  Many SLP's are employed by school systems.  They work with children in all grades, addressing full range of communication problems.  School-age children with communication difficulties often also suffer academically and socially, thereby adding additional confounding problems.

The three areas that the SLP addresses in the school environment are:

 1.     Speech – The actual production of speech sounds.

2.     Language – This includes the understanding and production of language and comprises of vocabulary & grammar.  The social use of language is also targeted.

3.     Auditory Processing Skills – This refers to what the brain does with what it hears, not hearing acuity.  These skills are the building blocks for reading and spelling.

LIBRARY

The Clarendon library has twice been the winner of the School Library Excellence Award. It is the hub of the school for learners and educators alike.

Break time finds groups of learners either playing chess, dressing up from the fantasy box, working on projects, practicing plays or viewing interesting exhibits such as snakes, skulls & exoskeletons.

Demonstrations of our varied and extensive programs linked with class themes have been videoed for networking and community development.

Our library goal is to equip students with critical thinking skills and to help them develop a sense of self as a researcher.  One visiting learner said of the Clarendon library:  Clarendon library is a place where you can learn and have fun.

AFTER-CARE:-

The after-care facility has been divided into three stations, thus reducing the numbers in each station, & keeping the smaller children separate from the older ones.

The 1st station, catering  for children from grades 1 to 4 has 4 carers , Mrs Glenda Williams, Mrs Di Thole,  Mrs Lynne Pennington & Ms Preciouse Mlotshwa.  They each have different time slots, but there are  always 3 on duty at any given time. Here, the children have a secure play area with a sandpit, jungle gym  and swings.  Play dough & books are also made available to the children.

The 2nd station caters for children from grades 5 & 6 and is supervised by Ms Sarah Erasmus.  Once the  children have done their homework under the supervision of Ms Erasmus, they are able to play freely in  the quad area outside.

The 3rd station caters for children from grades 6 & 7.  The grade 6's are split between station 2 & 3 to  keep the numbers of each group down.  This station is supervised by Mrs Coleen Halley, who also supervises the childrens homework.  As with the 2nd station, children are free to play in the  quad area once their homework has been done.
